HISTORYThe Democratic Republic of the Congo was an area of land that originally was home to a mix of various African tribes. In 1880, the country was overrun by the french, an in the face of guns and cannons, quickly surrendered and became a colony of France. Between then and 1960 the French Congo was a major shipping hub because of the Congo River that ran through it. In 1960, The Congo received its independence from France and entered a nineteen year struggle of varying tribal factions fighting for power. These included Alphonse Massamba-Debat's socialist government, Marien Ngouabi's Marxist-Leninist regime, and Joachim Yhombi-Opango's two year republic.
